Medical laboratories perform the tests ordered by doctors to help diagnose, treat and monitor their patients. When your doctor orders a lab test, we collect a specimen – usually a small sample of blood, urine or other body fluid. We test the specimen and report the result to the doctor who ordered the tests.
Each test has different requirements. Please see our Patient Instructions section or call us.
Yes. We have personnel who collect specimens from patients in their homes.
Yes, a pathologist is a specialist who identifies diseases by studying cells and tissues under a microscope. Pathology is a medical specialty focused on providing a definitive diagnosis of many different diseases, including cancer. Usually the services provided by a pathologist are on behalf of a referring physician. The referring physician is the doctor who directly treats the patient.
He or she examines tissue under a microscope to see what kind of abnormalities are in the tissue sample. The pathologist writes a report detailing the diagnosis. The information in the report helps the treating physician decide on a course of action.
Biopsy is the removal of cells or tissue for examination under a microscope. When a sample of tissue or fluid is removed with a needle, the procedure is called a needle biopsy or fine-needle aspiration.
Usually most cases are straight forward. There are, however, instances when more study and special procedures, including immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy, are required to make a final diagnosis.
The surgical pathology report identifies the tissue sample as belonging to a specific patient and details the diagnosis.
